Norfolk couple’s inspiring journey into fostering

Extraordinary Norfolk couple Tim and Bev have been on an inspiring journey into fostering, filled with compassion, dedication and unwavering love, and you could join them. Leanne Austin from Nexus Fostering reports.

There’s been a significant amount of research into the mental health and wellbeing benefits to be gained by helping others. Not only does it feel good but it can encourage us to be more active, more sociable, and more connected within our local community. But what if you could significantly improve the lives of those you are helping too?

If you’re looking for an opportunity that’s both rewarding and life-changing then think about fostering. Meet Tim and Bev from Norfolk, an extraordinary couple whose journey into fostering has not only changed the lives of vulnerable children but has also brought immeasurable joy and fulfilment into their own lives.

Tim says: “Bev had always had an interest in fostering, stemming from her childhood friend who grew up in a children's home. When we first discussed fostering, it wasn't on my radar — I lacked experience and didn't know anyone who had fostered.  That all changed during a weekend away in a shepherd's hut in Los Angeles, 18 years into our marriage. I stumbled upon a story about a woman fostering children straight from the hospital with life-limiting conditions. It struck me deeply, and from that moment, we knew we had to act. We needed to move as we lived on a farm and did not have a spare room to foster.”

Children enter foster care for a myriad of reasons, ranging from temporary family issues to severe cases of abuse or neglect. Regardless of the circumstances, these children need a nurturing adult — a foster carer — and a safe place to call home. As the number of vulnerable children in care continues to rise, foster carers from all walks of life are needed to make a lasting difference.

Bev shares: “As we navigated through the fostering process, we became independent panel members for another agency, aiming to broaden our understanding. We also became champions for a charity called Home For Good, supporting families in fostering and adoption. We did whatever we could to prepare. Drawing from our extensive life experiences, including Tim’s work with adults with learning disabilities and homelessness and my work with families and children for over 30 years, we wanted to apply our skills and knowledge effectively. We also have two children. Our daughter, now 19, still lives at home, and loves us fostering.”

Once the assessment is complete, and you are approved by the agency decision maker, the placements team at Nexus Fostering will match a child to your family. Tim explains: “Welcoming a child into our home is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Will they like us and our dog? We aim to ease their transition by meeting them beforehand, showing them around our home, and preparing their favourite meal on their first day. Our priority is to ensure they feel supported and understood, minimizing any overwhelming feelings they may experience."

Initially approved as Parent and Child foster carers, Tim and Bev now specialise in Therapeutic-led fostering. This service, overseen by a qualified psychologist, provides intensive support to carers, enabling them to offer an exceptional alternative to residential care for children with complex emotional needs, attachment difficulties, and challenging behaviours.

Reflecting on their journey, Tim shares: “Fostering has been the best thing that has happened to us. We have had some fantastic experiences over the last few years, working alongside many amazing professionals at Nexus Fostering and have received immense support and encouragement. The training we've undergone, covering everything from health and safety to therapeutic approaches, has equipped us with invaluable skills. Our favourite part has been learning to communicate with children through play — it's a powerful tool for connection."

So, what makes a great foster carer? For Tim and Bev, it's all about patience, empathy, and an open heart. Tim emphasizes: “Listening to the children, going the extra mile, and advocating for their best interests are paramount. Our role is to provide unconditional love, to show them they're valued, and to help them realize their potential.

“Our biggest job is drawing out the gold within them.”

Their story serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to embark on their fostering journey. With every child welcomed into their home, Tim and Bev are proof that fostering isn't just about changing lives — it's about nurturing futures and fostering hope for a brighter tomorrow.
